If you have saved your excel document, you might find that your previous formatting has disappeared. A common reason for this is that you may have saved the file as a .csv file (comma separated values). In this format the columns are created based on the commas separating your' cells. If you want to keep your original formatting save your file in the .xlsx (Microsoft Excel Workbook) format.
To change your .csv file into an .xlsx file, click File -> Save as... -> select .xlsx from the filetype dropdown list. Your formatting should then be saved.
